Hallo! My name is Alge, I will be your guide for the post today.

Helloooooooooooo here's an update Ò_Óv

First a painting for fun, as a gift for someone on dA!

Now for the practice! I've been doing some technical things, helicopters and stuff, difficult aaaaaugh D:<
So, first some photo studies!

Aaaand shit from imagination, trying to apply things I learned from the studies.

I usually try to not do the exact same thing from head, but rather focus on some underlying principles and get those and then try to apply them when I do stuff without ref, but here's a case where I did something really similar after the study. First photostudy, second from imagination:

Hurr durr, still doing the interior stuff! Fun, fun!

Here's a recent painting, trying to paint a full scenery from imagination, and pushing the materials a bit, and also trying to make it look a bit less dead.

Steps! I really regretted not being more careful this time, I hadn't intended for this to become a larger painting so I was messy with the initial drawing. There's some perspective weirdnesses that I should have fixed right in the beginning :(

Aaand a few studies. It's pretty obvious how the stuff I do from imagination is fairly similar, because I mainly do it to process the information I learned and to try to apply the approaches I played with during the studies. Something that works in a study might or might not work in something that's done from head, and finding out ways that work and ways that don't takes practice, but I feel it's really useful.
These are, again, all from random tumblr photos.

And here's a few more sketches from imagination. I'm sure you'll see how I picked up lots of this directly from the studies and then clumsily tried to make it work for me.

Hello! Spring is awesome! There's strawberries and flowers and it's not freezing anymore, yes! Awesome!

Okay so I got a bit tired of doing stuff all tight and clean soooo I did some studies focusing a bit on texture and brushiness and being loose in general while trying to keep in mind the actual structure underneath that I focused on with the cleaner studies. Not sure how successful these are, but trying out things is important!
These are all from random photos from tumblr.

I also did a personal painting, the first one in ages!! Fairly happy with how this one turned out, it went better than expected and is fairly close to how I wanted it! :D All from imagination.

And another one from imagination, trying to focus on what I learned from the architectural stuff. Also put the psd file online for those who might be interested!

Spring time = study time

Okay, regardless of the weather and temperatures outside I've decided that winter is now over. So there. What that means is that rather than cleaning up my room, it might be time to clean up my edges and painting style and so this post has some studies that focus on being cleaaaan and bright!

God I write some stupid shit hahaha.

Hi!
It's winter and I'm hibernating, so there's not much to show. But here's a couple of things that I found while rolling around on the floor.

Photostudy! I think this is an airplane.

Some sketchbook pages. The second one was done from life at SixMoreVodka when I was stealing the time of all these awesome people. Wish I could steal their skills too, damn.

Also it finally started snowing! I really really love that. Here's a quick sketch of the view out my window:

Here's a painting that I got bored with today D:

It's rather bland conceptwise (what a pretentious way to put it hahaha) but at least it's something fairly finished :D I also thought I'd show the steps here.

This is pretty much what I started out with, the only thing I had in mind here was that I wanted to do some fighterly chick on a white background. Of course it's better to plan a bit more than that :| But this time, and after doing lots of work that always was plan-sketch-render, doing something directionless felt really refreshing.

At this point I started thinking about the colors and started regretting not to have thought about anything... early enough hahaha. Not much to say here really, I tried out a lot of other different colors, and like I said, the process of doing something without having the final result planned is really enjoyable.

In my head, at this point the whole painting is like a big sketch rather than a drawing that just gets colored. I'm really playing around with every part of it to see if I can do anything that I like. Obviously, this is something you can't really do a lot with client work. I made the head both larger and smaller again, put in some other diagonals to see what kind of flow I was looking for, tried a couple of new positions for the arm, raised the leg... lots of things. Somewhere around here I also changed the colors, I remember wanting something autumnish and thus putting in greens and oranges rather than the gray and pink.

One thing that has been bothering me the whole time is the composition, that's why in every step the image is cropped differently :/ It's a bad habit that lots of digital guys have I guess. Seems like at this point I thought making it a full-body thing would be a good idea, also stockings to get more dark shapes in the lower part of the image. I actually like the graphic impact they had, but then in the end failed at making them read because their value seemed to close to her clothes.

I remember that raising and twisting the leg a bit more gave me an "aha" sort of effect when I tried it out, so I kept that. At this point I also thought that there probably wasn't gonna be much subtleness in a picture like this, so I changed the colorscheme again to have complimentarys rather than analogous colors (again, what a pretentious way to put it... what I'm saying is that I just wanted it to be more "in your face" to go along with the rest.) At this point, I also started actually rendering out stuff, which most of the time means I settled for the drawing/position of stuff. This is also where it usually gets really boring, AND what takes the longest :/

Done with rendering. NOW WHAT? In the end I cropped out pretty much everything, because the final fullsized thing looked so... stiff o_o This always seems to happen, but the actual problem is not that rendering makes the pose or anything stiffer, it's that all the messy brushstrokes and sketchy lines in the beginning make it look more dynamic so you don't notice that it's actually stiff. The best way to avoid it would be - of course - planning it better. Which brings us back to the start :D

And because I got them lying around, here's also a couple of sketches :)

Drew this for someone I met while playing Magic at the comic store, people go crazy when they find out you did stuff for that game =0 He was really nice and taught Jana and me how to play, so I made this for him. Ugh wings D:

Okay it seems I managed to scrape together a few thing to justify a blog post! D:< Some things happened, my hand was (and still kind of is) fucked, so I can't really do too much. I mostly watch anime these days, which takes a heavy toll on my mental health but it's fun <3
